Hydrogen Fuel Powered Drones

The UAV industry is experiencing a groundbreaking innovation with the emergence of hydrogen fuel powered drones. These drones utilise hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity to drive their brushless motors and propellers, unlike traditional lithium-ion battery-powered drones. With longer flight times, faster recharging, and zero emissions, hydrogen drones offer numerous advantages.

At the forefront of this cutting-edge technology are C3 | Drones and Robotics, an Australian-based drone supplier in collaboration with Doosan Mobility Innovation, a South Korean robotics manufacturer. The two recently showcased Doosan’s latest hydrogen drone technology at a demonstration day in Brisbane, revealing the DP30M2S power pack, a hydrogen-powered drone capable of flying up to two hours on a single charge. The power pack is equipped with two hydrogen fuel cells that convert hydrogen gas into electricity to power its brushless motors and propellers. The drone’s advanced software and lightweight design also allow it to fly quietly and maneuver in tight spaces, making it ideal for mining, surveying, and delivery services.

Hydrogen fuel cell technology provides several benefits over traditional lithium-ion batteries. Hydrogen fuel cells can be refueled much faster, reducing downtime and increasing productivity. They do not produce any harmful emissions, making them more eco-friendly than traditional batteries. Furthermore, hydrogen is an abundant and renewable energy source, making hydrogen-fuel-powered drones more sustainable and cost-effective in the long run.

Doosan Mobility Innovation showcased its hydrogen fuel cell technology at the demonstration day, highlighting its potential applications in various industries such as transportation, logistics, and energy. The company’s technology is already powering hydrogen-powered ships and hydrogen fuel cell forklifts.

The collaboration between C3 | Drones and Robotics and Doosan Mobility Innovation demonstrates the potential of hydrogen-fuel-powered drones to revolutionise the UAV industry. As the demand for unmanned aerial services continues to grow, the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell technology is playing a crucial role in meeting the industry’s evolving needs.

Hydrogen As a Fuel – The Do’s and Dont’s

Hydrogen As A Fuel – Some safety considerations

For many organisations, Hydrogen is a relatively new consideration due to a lack of products that utilise hydrogen for operation. Well, that is definitely changing as more and more products come onto the market utilising Hydrogen as a power source and as our shift to renewable energies intensifies. As such, there needs to be much education about Hydrogen and its associated hazards for circumstances such as transportation, storage and safe handling. The below video is thought-provoking as it discusses the safety elements that need to be considered when utilising your Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) Hydrogen drone.

Hydrogen Compressed (Hydrogen as a Fuel) – Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

For those wanting to reference the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for Compressed Hydrogen please refer to the link below. An MSDS is a document that provides health and safety information about products, substances or chemicals that are classified as hazardous substances or dangerous goods.

MSDS Compressed Hydrogen

MSDS sheets give a wealth of information including but not limited to the following:-

  • the product (its name, ingredients and properties)
  • who manufactured or imported it
  • how the product can affect your health
  • how to use and store it safely

What is the Process for Refilling Hydrogen Tanks?

In a historic agreement, Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) partnered with Coregas in Australia for the supply and filling of DMI hydrogen tanks. With numerous options to get your tanks filled it really comes down to geographic location, volumes and convenience. Enterprise customers may already have an account with Coregas and as such already have an existing workflow of pickup and drop off of gas tanks to and from the site. Other DMI hydrogen drone end users may decide the best method of filling is to have their tanks collected and filled by Coregas or alternatively they can be dropped off at any Coregas facility nationwide for filling and return.

Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) Partners with C3 Drones and Robotics

DMI signs an official contract with C3 Drones and Robotics to actively expand to the Australian market

Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) has partnered with an Australian company C3 Drones and Robotics for the distribution and development of UAV solutions in Australia and New Zealand. The official partnership was made in June this year with both parties expecting to expand the use of hydrogen fuel cell drone operations in Oceania.

C3 means command, control and communication, the full package required for remotely operated aircraft and robotics. At C3 Drones and Robotics we work directly with the biggest names in the RPAS and robotics industries, software developers, regulatory consultation teams and the world’s various Federal Aviation Authorities to deliver an off-the-shelf package for remote operations.

Doosan Mobility Innovation is focusing on the mobile application of hydrogen fuel cell technology, which is projected to provide diverse industrial solutions and contribute to public safety with green technology. DMI’s hydrogen fuel cell multi-copter can fly for up to 2 hours, with its remote vertical take-off and landing system. DMI has conducted long-range delivery flights with 72km as the longest record in the US Virgin Islands with blood sample delivery done with the Department of Health.

With such long-endurance hydrogen fuel cell drones, DMI and C3 Drones and Robotics will be able to expand the usage of not only drones but also hydrogen in Australia and New Zealand.

Advantages of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Drones

Hydrogen can overcome the power limits of standard lithium-ion batteries, enabling drones’ longer endurance. It is expected that the growing demand for special-purpose hydrogen drones in use cases such as surveillance and survey of long linear assets will proliferate the technology.

Advantages of the Doosan hydrogen fuel cell drone include:-

  • 2 hours plus of flight time
  • Long range allowing for new unthought-of use cases
  • Safe systems and easy hydrogen supply solutions
  • BVLOS capable with autonomous flight
