Doosan : Hydrogen Drone

The world’s first mass manufacturer of a hydrogen fuel cell drone making 2 hours of flight a reality.

Doosan Group is a global hydrogen fuel cell leader with over 50 years’ experience in hydrogen fuel cells. Doosan Mobility Innovation (DMI) focuses on the mobile applications of hydrogen fuel cell technology and they are heavily investing in drone applications to enable reliable long-endurance flight, accelerating the growth of the UAV industry.

Benefits of the Hydrogen Drone

Due to high energy density of hydrogen, fuel cells allow longer flight with heavier payloads than battery technology. The capacity of batteries is proportionate to the number of cells, but due to its weight, fails to provide longer uptime after a certain point. This makes fuel cells a more efficient solution for larger drone systems.

Doosan Drones in Action

DMI’s fuel cell-powered drones offer an excellent solution for conducting large-scale inspections, specifically for surveying damaged solar panels, performing search and rescue missions, and supporting construction efforts. With a flight duration exceeding two hours, one DMI drone system can examine photovoltaic panels as extensive as 43 MW per day while also carrying out mining tasks. This functionality permits users to perform comprehensive surveys across significant geographic areas efficiently, without disrupting plant operations.

Analysis of annual operations and maintenance utilization efficiency shows that a fuel cell powered-drone can save roughly 49% of inspection program costs while delivering over double the productivity of existing battery-powered drones.

Products

Doosan is offering commercial drone platforms with fuel cell power packs to maximise performance for industrial and inspection operations.

Doosan Powerpack

DP30M2S Powerpack

Ultralight fuel cells provide high energy output for bipolar plates, which take up the largest portion of the stack’s weight, we applied ultrathin metal developed with our proprietary technology and successfully reduced the total weight. A key material used in the stack is MEA (Membrane Electrode Assembly). This enables high energy output and durability for our fuel cell Powerpack. And thanks to the design of the stack structure, which maintains even energy output among cells, high energy output of the fuel cell Powerpack remains stable during flight.

DS30W Drone Frame

DS30W was constructed in semi-monocoque structure to reduce weight while maintaining durability. Every details in the drone was devised to lift customer experience, like quick release bolt in hatch and FCC module, and landing gear’s silicon pad that absorbs shock. In additoin, arms and propellers can be easily folded with one touch.
The drone will stop over at a nearby landing point or return to its home point when the remaining amount of hydrogen is insufficient, helping to guarantee a safe flight experience.

Hydrogen Tank

Type 4 hydrogen tanks are based on verified technology already being used in hydrogen-powered vehicles.

Doosan developed ultralight hydrogen tanks by optimizing the design of carbon fiber winding in fuel cell powerpack for mobile use.
