With over 50 years’ experience in hydrogen fuel cells, Doosan is focused on the mobile applications of fuel cell technology, and they’re heavily investing in UAV applications to enable reliable long-endurance flight, accelerating the growth of the UAV industry.
Their first major project tackles every drone pilot’s biggest pain point: flight time. Doosan Mobility developed hydrogen fuel cell technology in a small form factor to bring incredible flight times to commercial drone platforms. It is an emerging technology that has been placed in cars and trucks, and even used to power buildings.
What makes hydrogen fuel cells exciting?
First, they’re much more efficient than traditional battery technology, which for drones means significantly more flight time. So get ready for hours instead of minutes. Additionally, hydrogen fuel cells are also considered safer and easier maintenance than many gasoline or hybrid engines, which is traditionally the only other way you can get longer flight times over batteries. Another bonus, hydrogen is the most abundant element on earth, and hydrogen fuel cells are clean technology that produce no harmful emissions when they replace fossil fuels. The only byproduct of use is water.
So how does it work?
In simple terms, the purpose of a fuel cell is to produce an electrical current. Fuel cells are often compared to batteries because both convert the energy produced by a chemical reaction into usable electric power. Hydrogen enters the fuel cell from a tank, where it combines with oxygen. When the two elements interact in the cell, they produce very efficient energy, along with heat, like a standard battery, and small amounts of water, released as an extremely thin mist that doesn’t interact with the drone. Bottom line, fuel cells use simple science and an abundant natural energy source to make extremely efficient energy.
